Size:

Singular purpose and narrowly focused.

Role

Student’s Role:

Writer and researcher

Individual or Group:

Individual work

Instructional Design

ADDIE and/or MRK:

Neither but it did require research on a subject that was then converted to a developed product.

Related performance indicator(s)

Theoretical Foundations – Candidates demonstrate foundational knowledge of the contribution of research to the past and current theory of educational communications and technology.

Research was required to understand ADDIE and its role in instructional design. The researched revealed an iceberg effect in that the surface knowledge but was being supported by a library of research. This research was instrumental in understanding ADDIE’s palace and importance in instructional design.

Method – Candidates apply research methodologies to solve problems and enhance practice.

The research allowed me to understand ADDIE and its history. This was synthesized into conclusions about ADDIE’s importance and where there was room to improve the model.

Ethics – Candidates conduct research and practice using accepted professional and institutional guidelines and procedures.

All sources were attributed using APA style.

Reflection

This paper introduced me to the complexities of ADDIE’s origins and helped me to understand its controversies. That is knowledge that I can use when developing courses to adjust the steps to better suit my specific context. I have to know the rules to intelligently and thoughtfully break them.

Modified ADDIE: This was not a true instructional module but did require Analyzing problems, designing a paper to address the problem and developing a paper to disseminate the information.

Related performance indicator(s)

Theoretical Foundations – Candidates demonstrate foundational knowledge of the contribution of research to the past and current theory of educational communications and technology.

The current and past research provided context for the pressing issues for MOOCs. The research was required to understand the context and provide potential solutions.

Method – Candidates apply research methodologies to solve problems and enhance practice.

Based on the research the group recommended a solution to address the low retention rates in MOOCs.

Ethics – Candidates conduct research and practice using accepted professional and institutional guidelines and procedures.

All sources were attributed using APA style.

Reflection

The research required in this project was informative and helped me to better understand where MOOCs are succeeding and where they are failing which is professionally relevant given my field of study.  The skills gained in this class were important for all of the other research-based assignments that came later in the program.
